Customised door solutions for the National Museum of Oslo
… Museum in Oslo – a cultural jewel of the Nordic region Over 250 automatic doors from GEZE were used in the new construction of the National Museum in Oslo. Unique challenges were mastered with innovative solutions. © GEZE Scandinavia The National Museum in Oslo opens its doors – with customised door solutions from GEZE The new National Museum in Oslo is the largest museum in Scandinavia. With more than 250 door solutions, some of which were customised to the building’s special features and specifications, GEZE is contributing to the success of this prestigious construction project and will remain on hand with its services after the project ends. Quality door systems: automatic doors from GEZE The double leaf doors in the corridors are equipped with the GEZE Slimdrive EMD-F for automatic and convenient opening and closing. © GEZE Scandinavia The new National Museum in Oslo officially opened its doors to the public on 11 June 2022. The National Museum is the largest museum in Scandinavia and has an impressive permanent collection of around 6,500 objects. These range from historical design and arts and crafts to contemporary art, and offer visitors comprehensive insight into artwork traditions of the past and present. The stunning design of the museum by Kleihues + Schuwerk blends in seamlessly with the surrounding landmarks such as Oslo City Hall and the Nobel Peace Centre. The highlight of the building is the large, bright exhibition hall made of marble and glass, which crowns the building and gives it an iconic presence. The National Museum in Oslo is equipped with state-of-the-art door solutions from GEZE that ensure a seamless and safe visitor experience. GEZE has installed more than 250 complete automatic door systems throughout the museum, including models from the Powerturn and Slimdrive series. In addition to coordinating their design, the planning and implementation of the doors focussed primarily on the factors of accessibility , safety and functionality. Learn more about accessibility Learn more about safety Automatic telescopic sliding door drive for the museum café A telescopic sliding door invites guests to enter the café. © GEZE Scandinavia To provide café visitors with accessible, safe and convenient access to the National Museum Café, GEZE supplied a complete solution for the door. A double leaf solution was required, combining automation of the swing door and a telescopic sliding door to meet the unique requirements of this busy space. The first choice here was the GEZE Slimdrive SLT automatic telescopic sliding door drive, which scored highly due to several factors: Suitable for use on two and four-leaf sliding door systems Ideal for high-traffic doors Suitable for interior and exterior doors Connectivity and integration into the building automation system thanks to BACnet Ideal for confined spaces with a small opening width clearance or little space next to the electric strike Door leaf weights up to 80 kg per leaf Installation of large and heavy doors: special solutions for the National Museum in Oslo The GEZE Powerturn F is the most powerful drive on the Norwegian market and perfect for heavy-duty, special door solutions © GEZE Scandinavia The largest doors in the National Museum in Oslo are between … metres. All doors have two leaves. The large dimensions of the doors are necessary for transporting large exhibits and they must be able to be moved accordingly. For regular operation, most of the double leaf doors are additionally equipped with a regular size leaf inside the large leaf. GEZE supplied the Powerturn for these special solutions: the Powerturn F-IS was installed by GEZE's assembly team for the largest doors. The Powerturn F moves the regular single-leaf doors. The GEZE Powerturn is the most powerful drive on the market in Norway today. It can withstand a high opening frequency. It also has a number of advantages, i.e. a range of functions that other automatic doors do not have. That is why it is used here in the National Museum. Sverre Thømte, Project Manager at Oslo Låsservice The advantages of the GEZE Powerturn at a glance While the Powerturn F-IS is suitable for use on double leaf doors with closing sequence control, the Powerturn F is designed for single leaf doors. Both door systems are suitable for use on high-traffic interior and exterior doors and are approved for fire and smoke protection doors. They move single-action doors weighing up to 600 kg effortlessly and safely. Both Powerturn variants also stand out thanks to the following advantages, among others: Smart Smart function for easy manual opening Obstacle detection that interrupts the opening or closing process as soon as an obstacle is detected Connectivity and integration into the building automation system Push & Go function, which triggers the automatic drive after light manual pressure on the door leaf Individually customisable opening and closing speed Smooth implementation thanks to many years of expertise Jan Kristiansen, Project Manager GEZE Norway © GEZE Scandinavia Installation of the door operators on the large doors was highly complex and demanding. At least ten people from the GEZE team were in the building at all times. The installation was led by GEZE project managers Tore Ludvigsen and Jan Kristiansen, who together have many years of experience in the implementation of customised door solutions. It is of course very special to be involved in the construction of such a project and I am very proud of the work we at GEZE have done on this national landmark. Jan Kristiansen, Project Manager GEZE Norway Ensuring durability and safety through cooperation Sverre Thømte, Project Manager Oslo Låsservice Norway © GEZE Scandinavia In cooperation with the local Oslo Låsservice, which won the service contract for the building in 2021, all GEZE door operators are continuously maintained to ensure the safe use and long-term durability of the products. Project manager Sverre Thømte from Oslo Låsservice is responsible for the continuous coordination of all services in the building. "We are in contact with GEZE for service and support when things come up that we can't do ourselves. Both Oslo Låsservice and Statsbygg are very satisfied with products supplied by GEZE," says Sverre Thømte. Sliding door systems in the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Paris
… museum. © Christophe Mirabel / GEZE GmbH Sliding door systems in the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Paris Automatic sliding door systems from GEZE enhance the former workplace of the great fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. With a discreet, elegant design, invisible technology and access convenience, they underscore the ambience of this Second Empire-style city palace. The headquarters of the fashion brand was recently converted into a museum. The special structural challenges of the tall, wide entrances to the museum complex were overcome with door technology from GEZE. The door to haute couture – customised sliding doors The door to haute couture – customised sliding doors © Christophe Mirabel / GEZE GmbH The museum is a crowd puller. The automatic glass sliding door systems with powerful Powerdrive drives for the tall, wide entrances to the showrooms proved to be exactly the right choice. Stepping into the foyer through the first sliding door, the visitor comes face to face with the four pop art portraits in which Yves Saint Laurent was immortalized by Andy Warhol, as if being greeted by the “master of the house”. With tinted glass leaves and a drive system hidden from view, the nearby doors blend into the background against the colour intensity of these images. Customised wide-opening automatic sliding doors with heavy glass leaves can be found throughout the museum complex. They guide the visitor to the permanent collection, which includes the legendary tuxedo “Le Smoking”, the leather trench coat and other iconic items, to the areas with temporary exhibition themes and on to the studio. Fashion museum with a personal touch Architecture, design and door technology had to come together in harmony, because never before has such a large exhibition been conceived for a fashion designer. In a 450-square-metre museum complex, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of haute couture: a retrospective of the life and work of Yves Saint Laurent and changing themed exhibitions from a collection of 5,000 haute couture models. At the heart of the museum is “Le Studio”, where Saint Laurent spent three decades designing all his collections. The effort that Bergé put into telling the story of the brand and the work of his friend shows just how intense the interaction between the project participants was. These include project manager Réda Issolah from the Paris firm JMR Architectes, interior designer Jacques Grange, set designer Nathalie Crinière and curator Aurélie Samuel. We at GEZE contributed to this collaboration from the very beginning, in particular in working with the architects. It was important to us to provide all those involved with inspiring suggestions for door solutions, taking into account all the architectural and aesthetic factors and all aspects of the new use of the building. We knew how close many of the exhibits would be to the tall, wide entrances, and that the doors would therefore have to be extremely discreet. Philippe Eugène, Managing Director of the subsidiary GEZE France Door aesthetics, access convenience and easy handling Door aesthetics, access convenience and easy handling © Christophe Mirabel / GEZE GmbH Drawing on our expertise in the most diverse types of buildings with the most diverse uses and based on the flexible options of our product portfolio, we presented all the feasible door solutions from GEZE. A joint decision was made to use automatic sliding doors with grey-tinted glass leaves and door drives embedded in the ceiling. The sliding door systems meet all the requirements for access convenience and easy handling by the staff. We naturally also took control of coordinating the cooperation between all parties involved in the construction. As a result, the sliding door systems could be installed and put into operation quickly and smoothly. Features and benefits of automatic sliding doors With Powerdrive drive systems, GEZE France has created customised automatic sliding glass doors for large door openings: Discreet door design Harmony with the Second Empire-style interior décor Invisible door technology entirely hidden in the ceiling Safety sensors with matching ceiling mounting kit Tinted glass leaves The staging of the exhibits is not affected by the nearby doors Transparency without losing intimate room atmosphere, e.g. for private events Door convenience and safety Easy automatic access for all in both directions Reliable and easy opening and closing of the heavy sliding leaves even with high access frequency Hold-open time adjusts to access frequency Increased visitor flow: the leaves are automatically kept open longer Highest personal safety standards: DIN 18650 and EN 16005 Ease of use Individually adjustable motion parameters: acceleration, hold-open time, opening and closing speed Central operation via a programme switch Future-proof: possibility of connection to a building system for monitoring or changing the door functions remotely Support and individual services Support- right from conceptual planning and throughout the entire life cycle of the door systems Support of the construction phase: coordination of all parties involved in the construction to ensure smooth processes Customised service and maintenance Permanently reliable and safe operation Value preservation and extended life span And finally, the best part: the haute couture A provocation shapes the fashion of today He was one of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century. Yves Saint Laurent’s creations were in step with the emancipation of women and brought fashion and art together. The museum features many of the haute couture models that promoted what is self-evident in women’s fashion today but was provocative in the 1960s – such as the trench coat and the trouser suit. In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent dressed women in a tuxedo as a statement on the emancipation movement. “Le Smoking” gave new impetus to the men’s suits that Marlene Dietrich had worn since the 1930s – and today the trouser suit is a classic outfit for women in business and politics. Yves Saint Laurent was one of the first fashion designers to incorporate art into his designs. Haute couture dresses are displayed next to the paintings that inspired them, such as “Musical Instruments on a Table” by Picasso. Then there is the unmistakable “Mondrian dress”, which threw a new spotlight on this artist and has since become legendary. In the heart of the museum is the studio (“Le Studio”). With bolts of cloth, drawings and sketches, the horn-rimmed glasses on the desk and the white work coat over the chair, everything is kept exactly as it was during the lifetime of the designer, who passed away in 2008. To get them in the right mood, visitors pass through a dark zone to enter a kind of anteroom with two single-leaf automatic Slimdrive SL NT sliding door systems arranged one after the other. Deep black door leaves emphasise the sense of 'open sesame' before entering the 240 m long replica cave with its unique gallery of images. Behind these doors, visitors will find an educational obstacle course that uses the latest virtual image technology to help decode and understand the Stone Age paintings, and provide a wealth of information about the caves. GEZE door closer systems offer optimal solutions for asymmetrically divided fire protection doors: the closing sequence control, integrated invisibly into the slimline guide rails, ensures that the active leaf is kept open until the passive leaf is closed. After use - and especially when people are fleeing in the event of danger - both door leaves close again perfectly, so that the door fully maintains its fire and smoke safety function. Automatic swing doors connect the exhibition areas The educational obstacle course consists of a series of exhibition and projection rooms. The ‘Théatre de l’art pariétal’ highlights the huge significance of the Lascaux grotto in international cave painting research A 3D cinema allows visitors to explore one of the original caves down to the tiniest detail The ‘Galerie de l’imaginaire’ interactively presents the connections between cave paintings and modern art The connecting doors between the rooms are special soundproof doors which prevent noise from demonstrations penetrating into the next room. The automatic swing doors close themselves as soon as a film projection begins, and open when it is finished. Sensors of course ensure the required safety levels at the heavy soundproof doors. Fire protection: Sliding doors in the Copenhagen Experimentarium
… museum in Copenhagen. GEZE Denmark has equipped the building with suitable door technology to optimise fire protection and emergency exit safety. Improved fire protection: Smoke-proof sliding doors with GEZE automation secure escape routes in the Experimentarium The Experimentarium in Copenhagen had to meet strict fire and smoke safety requirements. Smoke-proof sliding doors needed be installed for this purpose. As a manufacturer of smoke-proof sliding doors that are also approved in Denmark, GEZE was able to help bring the conversion measures to a successful conclusion. Modernisation: Directing visitor flows and increasing safety The copper staircase is an abstract interpretation of the structure of a DNA strand. As part of a comprehensive renovation and modernisation programme, the Experimentarium building was to be converted into a high-tech facility capable of welcoming up to 500,000 visitors per year. In addition to a positive visitor experience, the legal requirements regarding fire protection and emergency exit protection were naturally at the top of the priority list for building contractor Einar Kornerup. The former bottling halls of the Tuborg brewery, which have housed the Experimentarium since 1991, have undergone a major façade renovation with a new, exciting design. The first thing you see in the entrance hall is a spectacular copper staircase. Like a DNA molecule, it winds its way up through the three floors of the building. The building was significantly expanded to include an additional floor, a large roof terrace with outdoor science and technology activities and experiments, a large restaurant and picnic area, a conference centre, learning facilities and a number of workshops. Strict fire and smoke safety requirements and the express wish to install smoke-proof sliding doors in the building were the reasons why GEZE Denmark was awarded the contract, as GEZE is the only company in Denmark that supplies approved smoke-proof sliding doors. Experience the Experimentarium The Experimentarium is Denmark's intuitive science museum and is a Mecca of activities and opportunities for curious minds and creative spirits, both young and old. The design of the Experimentarium is inspired by science and technology. The 17 interactive exhibitions are designed as separate universes, each offering a unique experience. The exhibitions offer knowledge about inventions and physical phenomena, along with excitement and a great time, information about water and the oceans, the senses, light, energy, the quirks of the human body, mathematical challenges, microorganisms, mind games – and, of course, soap bubbles in every shape and size. Smoke-proof sliding doors for improved fire protection The strict guidelines governing the safety of such a complex building are described in detail in the Experimentarium's fire strategy, and include ventilation, escape routes, automatic fire alarm systems and sprinkler systems. For example, escape routes in buildings must be secured in the event of heavy smoke in order to ensure that guests and staff can self-rescue and to keep the routes clear for rescue services. At the same time, the conversion work should take into account not only functional and safety-related factors, but also design aspects as well. For an ideal combination of design and functionality, the architectural firm CEBRA opted to install smoke-proof sliding doors that close automatically and only open after manual release. When 2,500 happy guests are visiting the exhibitions or we are hosting a large gala event with hundreds of attendees, everything simply has to run smoothly. Safety must be ensured, and all moving parts must be well lubricated and able to withstand use. When creating the framework for the new Experimentarium, we always focused on selecting the right suppliers and products. Kim Gladstone Herlev, Managing Director of the Experimentarium Accessible emergency exits for building entrances The entrance area of the Experimentarium is inviting and bright, welcoming visitors and staff alike. Access for all is a matter of course, so that people with limited mobility or families with prams feel welcome and can move around the building without obstacles. Special attention is also paid to accessible escape routes. After all, everyone must be able to leave the building quickly and safely in the event of danger. For this reason, GEZE relies on automatic swing and sliding doors with increased safety features: Slimdrive systems for doors with high traffic volumes Specially developed for large, heavy doors: the Slimdrive SL-RD sliding door system in an understated design Three single-leaf glass sliding doors from GEZE were designed and supplied for the inside area. The doors, each
